Metronymics are a system of naming in which a person's given name is derived from their mother's given name. This is in contrast to patronymics, where a name is derived from the father's given name. Metronymic systems, while less common globally than patronymic ones, have existed in various cultures and historical periods.

In some societies, metronymics were used to emphasize the importance of maternal lineage or to indicate social status. For example, in certain matrilineal societies, the inheritance of property or titles might follow the female line, making the mother's name a significant identifier.
