Metallography is the scientific study of the physical structure and components of metals and their alloys. This field aims to understand how the microstructure of a metal influences its properties and performance. Metallographic techniques are crucial for quality control, failure analysis, and the development of new materials. The process typically involves preparing a specimen for microscopic examination.

Specimen preparation begins with sectioning, where a representative sample is cut from the larger piece. This is followed by mounting, often embedding the sample in a resin to create a manageable size and shape for subsequent polishing. Grinding is then performed using successively finer abrasive papers to remove surface damage from cutting and to create a flat surface. Polishing is the next critical step, utilizing abrasive slurries on rotating wheels to achieve a mirror-like finish, free from scratches.

After polishing, the specimen is etched. Etching uses chemical reagents to selectively attack different phases or structural features of the metal, revealing the underlying microstructure. This might include grain boundaries, different crystal phases, or inclusions. The etched surface can then be examined under a microscope, typically an optical microscope, to observe and analyze the revealed structures. Electron microscopy techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), can be used for higher magnification and resolution, providing detailed information about nanoscale features. Analysis of the microstructure can reveal defects, assess heat treatment effectiveness, and predict material behavior under various conditions.
