Meteorproduktion refers to the formation and release of meteors, which are the streaks of light seen in the night sky when small celestial bodies, known as meteoroids, enter Earth's atmosphere. These meteoroids are typically fragments of asteroids or comets, ranging in size from dust grains to small boulders. As a meteoroid encounters the Earth's atmosphere, friction with air molecules causes it to heat up intensely. This superheating results in the glowing trail we observe as a meteor. The vast majority of meteoroids burn up completely in the atmosphere, never reaching the ground.

The frequency and intensity of meteor showers are directly related to meteorproduktion. These showers occur when Earth passes through a stream of debris left behind by a comet or asteroid. As Earth traverses this debris field, a higher than usual number of meteoroids enter the atmosphere, creating a spectacular display. The predictability of some meteor showers, like the Perseids and Geminids, is due to the consistent orbital paths of the parent comets or asteroids. The composition of the original celestial body influences the color of the meteor's light, with different elements burning at distinct temperatures and emitting specific wavelengths.
