Metanolem is a term that occasionally appears in dictionaries and online sources as a name for methanol, or as a misspelling or variant spelling of methanol. In formal chemistry, the standard name for CH3OH is methanol. Therefore, most information attributed to metanolem concerns methanol.

Chemically, methanol is the simplest primary alcohol. It is a colorless, volatile liquid at room temperature, miscible with water and most organic solvents. Its boiling point is 64.7°C, and its density is about 0.791 g/cm3. Methanol is flammable and forms explosive mixtures with air.

Production and uses: Industrial methanol is produced from synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) over a catalyst. It is a key feedstock for formaldehyde and acetic acid production and is used as a solvent, antifreeze, fuel additive, and as a precursor to many chemicals such as methyl tert-butyl ether and acetic acid.

Safety: Methanol is highly toxic. Ingestion, inhalation, or dermal exposure can cause severe metabolic acidosis, visual impairment, or death. It is metabolized to formaldehyde and formic acid, which damage the optic nerve and other tissues. Safe handling requires ventilation, proper storage, and personal protective equipment; exposure limits are enforced by occupational safety agencies.
