Metallocenes are a class of organometallic compounds consisting of two cyclopentadienyl anions (Cp) bound to a metal atom, typically in the +2 oxidation state. The general formula for a metallocene is (C5H5)2M, where M is a metal. The structure is sandwich-like, with the metal atom situated between the two parallel Cp rings. This arrangement leads to unique chemical and physical properties, including high thermal stability and solubility in organic solvents.

The discovery of ferrocene, the first metallocene, in 1951 was a landmark event in inorganic chemistry, earning its discoverers the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1973.
