Metadatatiedostot, often referred to as metadata files, are files that contain information about other data. This descriptive information can include a wide range of details, such as when a file was created, its author, its size, the type of content it contains, and how it should be interpreted.

These files are crucial for organizing, managing, and understanding digital information. For example, in a digital library, metadata files might describe the author, title, publication date, and subject matter of a book, allowing users to search and retrieve it more effectively. In photography, metadata files (often embedded within image files as EXIF data) can store information like the camera model, date and time of capture, aperture, and shutter speed.

Metadata files can take various forms. They might be standalone files with extensions like .xml, .json, or .yaml, or they can be embedded directly within the data files themselves. The purpose is always to provide context and facilitate the use and comprehension of the primary data. Without metadata, digital assets would be far more difficult to locate, categorize, and utilize efficiently, hindering data discovery and interoperability.
