Mesencephalonból is a Hungarian term referring to the midbrain. The midbrain, also known as the mesencephalon, is a small, crucial region of the brain located at the top of the brainstem, below the cerebrum and above the pons. It connects the forebrain to the hindbrain and plays a vital role in various functions, including vision, hearing, motor control, sleep and wake cycles, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation.

Structurally, the midbrain is divided into several key parts. The tectum, located at the dorsal (back) side, contains the superior and inferior colliculi. The superior colliculi are involved in visual reflexes, helping to orient the eyes and head towards stimuli. The inferior colliculi are important for auditory processing and reflexes, contributing to the startle response to sounds. Ventral to the tectum is the tegmentum, which contains structures like the substantia nigra and the red nucleus. The substantia nigra is a critical component of the motor system, producing dopamine, and its degeneration is associated with Parkinson's disease. The red nucleus also plays a role in motor coordination. The cerebral peduncles, located on the ventral (front) side, are large bundles of nerve fibers that connect the cerebrum to the brainstem and carry motor commands.

The mesencephalonból, or midbrain, is supplied by branches of the basilar artery and the posterior cerebral arteries. Its complex network of neural pathways and nuclei enables it to integrate sensory information and influence motor output, making it indispensable for basic life functions and sensory perception.
