Merenpohjista refers to the geological formations and physical characteristics of the ocean floor. This vast and largely unexplored realm covers over 70% of the Earth's surface and is a dynamic environment shaped by tectonic activity, volcanic processes, and sedimentation.

The ocean floor is not a uniform plain but rather a complex topography. Major features include continental shelves, which are submerged extensions of continents; continental slopes, steep drops from the shelf edge to the deep ocean floor; and abyssal plains, vast, flat areas covering the deep ocean basins. Sediments on the ocean floor are derived from various sources, including terrestrial erosion, marine organisms, volcanic ash, and even extraterrestrial dust. These sediments can form layers that preserve a record of past oceanographic conditions and climate change.

The study of the ocean floor, known as bathymetry, is crucial for understanding Earth's geology, marine ecosystems, and the distribution of natural resources. It also plays a role in navigation, communication cable laying, and the assessment of seismic hazards. The deep ocean floor remains a frontier of scientific exploration, holding many secrets about our planet.
