Meningitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition that affects the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, with the type of antibacterial medication depending on the suspected causative organism. In severe cases, hospitalization and intensive care may be necessary to manage complications and prevent further deterioration.

Prevention of meningitis often focuses on vaccination against certain bacteria, such as Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcus. Good personal hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, as well as covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, can also help to reduce the risk of developing meningitis.
