Megtermékenyítés is the Hungarian term for fertilization, the biological process by which a male gamete (sperm) fuses with a female gamete (ovum) to form a zygote. This fusion is a crucial step in sexual reproduction for many organisms, leading to the development of a new individual. In humans and other mammals, fertilization typically occurs within the female reproductive tract, specifically in the fallopian tube. Upon ejaculation, sperm travel through the cervix and uterus to reach the fallopian tubes. If an egg is present, usually released from the ovary during ovulation, one sperm cell penetrates its outer layers. This penetration triggers a series of events that prevent other sperm from entering the egg. The fusion of the sperm's nucleus with the egg's nucleus results in a single cell, the zygote, containing a complete set of chromosomes from both parents. This zygote then begins to divide and develop, eventually implanting in the uterus to form an embryo.
