Megkülönböztetéshez is the Hungarian word for discrimination. It refers to the unfair or prejudicial treatment of a person or group of people based on characteristics such as race, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, or other protected attributes. This treatment can manifest in various forms, including direct or indirect discrimination, harassment, and victimization.

Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated less favorably than another person in a comparable situation because of a protected characteristic. For example, refusing to hire someone solely because of their age is direct age discrimination. Indirect discrimination occurs when a policy, practice, or criterion, although seemingly neutral, puts individuals with a particular protected characteristic at a disadvantage compared to others, and cannot be objectively justified. An example could be a height requirement for a job that disproportionately excludes women, if that height is not essential for performing the job duties.

Harassment related to a protected characteristic is unwanted conduct that violates a person's dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment. Victimization occurs when someone is treated unfairly because they have made a complaint or allegation of discrimination, or supported someone who has.

Discrimination is widely recognized as a violation of human rights and is prohibited by law in many countries, including Hungary. Legal frameworks aim to protect individuals from discriminatory practices and provide avenues for redress. Promoting equality and preventing discrimination are ongoing societal goals.
