Matvælaeftirlit, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, is a governmental agency responsible for the oversight and regulation of food safety, animal health, and related industrial processes within Iceland. Established in 2000 through the amalgamation of the former Ministry of Agriculture’s Food Safety Division and the Veterinary Council, the authority operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Welfare. Its mandate includes enforcing legislation that governs the production, inspection, and labeling of food products, as well as monitoring animal diseases that could impact public health or the economy.
