Materiau is the French term for material and is used in science and engineering to denote any substance that can be used to produce artifacts or perform a function. In materials science, a material’s value lies in its properties, how those properties emerge from composition and microstructure, and how processing can modify them. Materials are typically grouped into metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and bone are also studied alongside engineered materials.

Materials science examines the relationship between composition, structure, properties, and performance, and how processing affects these attributes. The microstructure—grains, phases, and inclusions—largely determines mechanical traits such as strength, stiffness, and toughness. Thermal, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties extend a material’s suitability to energy systems, electronics, optics, and sensing. Processing methods, including casting, forming, heat treatment, joining, and additive manufacturing, shape the final microstructure and surface condition, enabling design optimization.

Applications span construction, transportation, consumer electronics, energy conversion and storage, and healthcare. Material selection is driven by required performance, cost, manufacturability, and environmental impact. Sustainability considerations emphasize durability, recyclability, and lifecycle assessment, influencing decisions from extraction to end-of-life.

Historically, material choices evolved from natural substances to engineered alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Contemporary research continues to expand capabilities with advanced materials—such as lightweight, high-strength metals; durable ceramics; and multifunctional polymers—aiming to improve performance while reducing environmental footprint.
