Materiaalilisäkkeet, known in English as material additives or simply additives, are substances incorporated into a base material to enhance its properties or impart new characteristics. These additions are typically used in small quantities but can significantly alter the performance, durability, appearance, or processability of the final product. The choice of additive depends heavily on the base material and the desired outcome.

In plastics, additives can improve UV resistance, flame retardancy, impact strength, or color. For example, plasticizers are added to make PVC more flexible, while antioxidants prevent degradation caused by oxygen. In concrete, admixtures are used to control setting time, improve workability, or enhance strength and durability. Water-reducing admixtures, for instance, allow for less water to be used while maintaining or improving slump.

The paint and coatings industry utilizes a wide range of additives. These can include pigments for color, binders for adhesion, rheology modifiers to control flow, and biocides to prevent microbial growth. Similarly, in the production of rubber, additives like carbon black are used to reinforce the material and improve its tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
