The matalajännitedirektiivi, or Low Voltage Directive (LVD), is a European Union directive that establishes the essential safety requirements for electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits. Its primary goal is to ensure that electrical products placed on the EU market are safe for consumers and do not pose a risk to property or domestic animals.

The scope of the LVD covers most electrical equipment operating with a voltage input or output between 50 and 1000 volts for alternating current (AC) and 75 and 1500 volts for direct current (DC). This includes a vast range of products, from household appliances and power tools to lighting equipment and electronic components. However, certain specific types of electrical equipment are excluded from the LVD, such as those used in explosive atmospheres, for specific medical purposes, or in electrical installations of buildings.

Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products comply with the LVD. This typically involves conducting a risk assessment, applying relevant harmonised European standards, and affixing the CE marking to the product. The CE marking signifies that the product meets the essential requirements of the directive and other applicable EU legislation. Member states are responsible for transposing the LVD into their national laws and for market surveillance to ensure compliance and remove non-compliant products from the market.
