Mastopexy is a surgical procedure also known as a breast lift. It is performed to correct sagging breasts, a condition that can result from aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or genetics. The primary goal of a mastopexy is to reshape and uplift the breasts, making them appear firmer and more youthful.

During the surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin and reshapes the breast tissue. The nipple and areola are also repositioned higher on the breast mound to create a more aesthetically pleasing contour. There are several types of mastopexy, distinguished by the pattern of incisions used. These include periareolar (around the areola), vertical (from the areola down to the breast crease), and anchor (around the areola, down the breast, and along the crease). The choice of technique depends on the degree of sagging and the desired outcome.

Recovery time varies, but most patients can return to light activities within a week or two, with strenuous exercise usually restricted for several weeks. Swelling and bruising are common post-operative effects and typically subside over time. While mastopexy can significantly improve the appearance of the breasts, it does not change breast size. If a patient desires larger breasts, breast augmentation with implants may be performed concurrently or in a separate procedure. As with any surgery, there are potential risks, including infection, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and asymmetry, which are discussed with the surgeon during the consultation.
