Massmaterial is a term used in speculative science and science fiction to describe a class of materials whose mass-related properties can be externally controlled or continuously tuned. In principle, a massmaterial would exhibit variable mass density and inertial response while retaining structural integrity, enabling changes in weight and dynamic behavior without altering geometry.

Possible mechanisms for massmaterials include reversible phase changes that alter packing density, controlled intercalation of light or heavy elements, and metamaterial architectures that produce an effective density that depends on frequency or applied fields. In theory, the distinction between intrinsic mass density and effective mass—how a material responds to acceleration—could be exploited to modulate inertia. Real materials show density changes during phase transitions or swelling, but achieving fast, repeatable, macroscopic control of density and inertia remains unsettled and largely hypothetical. Designers emphasize energy costs, material fatigue, and stability under environmental conditions as key challenges.
