Massaanalysators are scientific instruments used to measure the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. This information allows for the identification and quantification of different chemical substances within a sample. The fundamental principle behind mass spectrometry involves ionizing the sample, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio, and then detecting them.

The ionization process can be achieved through various methods, such as electron ionization, electrospray ionization, or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, depending on the nature of the sample. Once ionized, the ions are accelerated into a mass analyzer. Common types of mass analyzers include quadrupole, time-of-flight (TOF), and magnetic sector analyzers. Each type employs different physical principles to separate the ions. After separation, the ions strike a detector, which generates an electrical signal proportional to the number of ions. This signal is then processed to create a mass spectrum, a graph that plots ion abundance against mass-to-charge ratio. Mass analyzers are crucial tools in a wide range of fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, and environmental science, for tasks such as determining molecular weights, identifying unknown compounds, and studying isotopic compositions.
