Masennuslääkeryhmät, or antidepressant drug groups, refer to categories of medications used to treat depression and other mood disorders. These drugs primarily work by influencing the levels and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are believed to play a role in mood regulation.

One of the most common groups is the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs work by increasing the amount of serotonin available in the synaptic cleft, which is the space between nerve cells. Examples include fluoxetine, sertraline, and escitalopram. Another significant group is the Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), which affect both serotonin and norepinephrine. Venlafaxine and duloxetine are examples of SNRIs.

Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) are an older class of antidepressants that also affect serotonin and norepinephrine, but they can have more side effects than newer medications due to their broader impact on other neurotransmitters. Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) are another older class, which work by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down monoamine neurotransmitters. Due to potential interactions with certain foods and other medications, MAOIs are typically used when other treatments have not been effective.

Atypical antidepressants represent a diverse group of medications that do not fit neatly into the other categories and have varied mechanisms of action. Bupropion and mirtazapine are examples. The choice of antidepressant group and specific medication depends on individual patient factors, including the severity and type of depression, potential side effects, and interactions with other medications. Treatment is often tailored and may involve adjustments over time.
