Martensithärdning, also known as martensitic hardening, is a heat treatment process used to increase the hardness and strength of steel. The process involves heating the steel to a temperature above its critical point, typically between 850°C and 1000°C, and then rapidly cooling it, often by quenching in oil, water, or air. This rapid cooling transforms the steel's microstructure into martensite, a hard and brittle form of iron carbide.

The key to successful martensithärdning is the quenching process, which must be controlled to avoid the formation of other microstructures, such as pearlite or bainite, which would reduce the steel's hardness. The cooling rate is crucial, as it determines the final microstructure and, consequently, the steel's mechanical properties.

After quenching, the steel is often tempered by reheating it to a lower temperature, typically between 200°C and 600°C, to reduce its brittleness and improve its toughness. This process, known as tempering, transforms the martensite into tempered martensite, which has a more balanced combination of hardness and toughness.

Martensithärdning is widely used in the manufacturing of tools, dies, and other components that require high hardness and strength. However, it is important to note that the process can also introduce residual stresses and distortions in the steel, which may require further processing to correct.
