The word combines mark, meaning ground, with täcks, from täcka, meaning to cover. In practical use, marktäcks encompasses both living ground-cover plants and non-living soil coverings.

Living marktäcks include low-growing, spreading plants selected for shade tolerance, drought resistance, and shallow rooting. Common examples in temperate regions are Vinca minor (periwinkle), Ajuga reptans (bugleweed), Sedum spp. (stonecrop), and Thymus serpyllum (creeping thyme). Non-living marktäcks comprise mulches such as wood chips or bark, as well as geotextiles, decorative gravel, or other materials laid over soil to reduce weeds and conserve moisture.
