Magneettisiterä, also known as magnetic tape, is a medium for magnetic recording used for audio, video, and data storage. It consists of a long, thin strip of plastic film coated with a magnetic material, typically iron oxide or chromium dioxide. The material allows the tape to be magnetized when exposed to a magnetic field, enabling it to store information.

Magnetic tape was widely used in the mid-20th century for audio recording, particularly in professional studios and for home use. It became a standard format for music production, allowing for multitrack recording and editing. Notable formats include reel-to-reel tape, cassette tapes, and later, compact cassette (Cassette) and DAT (Digital Audio Tape).

In data storage, magnetic tape was a foundational technology for early computers, used for backing up and archiving information. Tape drives, such as those using reel-to-reel or cartridge formats, were common in mainframe and minicomputer systems. While modern computing has largely shifted to solid-state and optical storage, magnetic tape remains relevant for long-term data archiving due to its durability, cost-effectiveness, and ability to store vast amounts of data.

The decline of magnetic tape in consumer electronics began with the rise of digital formats like CDs and DVDs, as well as portable audio devices like MP3 players. However, it retains niche applications in professional audio production, archival storage, and certain industrial settings. Modern magnetic tape continues to evolve, with high-density formats like LTO (Linear Tape-Open) used in enterprise data centers for scalable backup solutions.
