Some widely used abbreviations carry standard spellings and punctuation, such as the use of periods in certain formal contexts or the absence of a period for modern unit symbols. Examples commonly encountered in Estonian writing include nt. for näiteks (for example) and vt. for vaata (see), as well as units such as km for kilomeeter.
