Lögmætra is a term found in some Icelandic and Old Norse legal vocabulary, but it is a markedly obscure and debated word. In contemporary scholarship there is no widely agreed-upon definition, and the term appears only in a small number of medieval sources.

The most common linguistic analysis treats lögmætra as a compound of lög, meaning law, and mætr (or mætr), meaning measure or standard. This yields proposed senses such as “a standard of law” or “the measurement by which laws are judged,” and it has also been suggested that it could refer to “one who measures or applies the law.” The exact part of speech and precise sense vary between manuscript traditions, and there is no single consensus.

Attestations for the term are limited and do not appear in the central legal codes of the period. Because evidence is sparse, scholars differ on whether lögmætra denotes a conceptual standard used to evaluate cases, or a title for a person or office tasked with applying or interpreting laws. The uncertainty reflects broader challenges in interpreting limited medieval sources and the fluidity of legal vocabulary at the time.

If understood as a real term within its historical context, lögmætra would shed light on how medieval Icelandic legal thinking organized standards, procedures, and roles in the application of law. The word also illustrates the difficulties of reconstructing precise meanings from fragmentary texts and highlights the importance of philological caution when dealing with rare legal terminology.
