Línuveiðum, often translated as longline fishing, is a commercial fishing technique that uses a main fishing line with numerous baited hooks attached at intervals by means of branch lines called snoods. This method can be employed in both pelagic (open ocean) and demersal (seabed) fisheries. The main line can extend for many kilometers, sometimes tens of kilometers, making it capable of covering vast areas of the ocean.

There are several types of longline fisheries. Pelagic longlines are typically set near the surface and are used to catch migratory pelagic fish such as tuna, swordfish, and marlin. Demersal longlines, on the other hand, are set on the seabed and target species like cod, halibut, and various rockfish. The depth at which demersal lines are set can vary significantly depending on the target species and the underwater topography.

Línuveiðum is a versatile method but can also lead to bycatch of non-target species, including seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals, particularly with pelagic longlines. Conservation efforts often focus on developing and implementing mitigation measures to reduce this bycatch. These measures can include using specific bait types, setting lines at night, or employing streamer lines to deter seabirds. Despite these challenges, longlining remains an important fishing method globally, providing a significant source of seafood.
