líklegir

Líklegir is an Icelandic adjective meaning "likely" or "probable." It is used to describe something that has a high chance of occurring or being true, such as events, outcomes, or statements. The word functions as a qualifier and can refer to people, objects, or situations when probability is being indicated.

In Icelandic, liklegur changes form to agree with gender and number of the noun it modifies. It can appear in different forms such as liklegur (masculine singular), likleg (feminine singular in some contexts), and liklegt or liklegir/liklegar/likleg depending on number and definiteness. The common predicative construction is it is likely that + clause, as in "Það er líklegt að hann komi" ("It is likely that he will come"). Líklegir can also modify plural nouns, for example "líklegir atburðir" ("likely events").

The adverb form liklega is used to quantify an action or event, similar to "probably" in English. For example, "Hann mun líklega koma" or "Hann kemur líklega" means "He will probably come." Líklega is also used in more cautious or hedged assertions in formal writing or reporting.
