Läppävuotojen refers to the regurgitation or backward flow of blood through a heart valve. Heart valves are designed to open in one direction to allow blood to flow forward and then close to prevent it from flowing backward. When a valve leaks, it fails to close properly, allowing some blood to return to the chamber it just left. This can place an increased workload on the heart, as it has to pump the leaked blood forward again with each contraction.

The severity of läppävuotojen can range from mild to severe, and it can affect any of the four heart valves: the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, aortic valve, and pulmonary valve. Mild läppävuotojen may not cause any symptoms and might not require treatment. However, significant leakage can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, and swelling in the legs and feet.

Causes of läppävuotojen are varied and can include valve degeneration due to aging, heart attack, rheumatic fever, certain infections like endocarditis, congenital heart defects, and conditions like high blood pressure or dilated cardiomyopathy that can stretch the heart chambers and pull the valve leaflets apart. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, listening to the heart with a stethoscope for abnormal sounds (murmurs), and imaging tests such as an echocardiogram, which uses ultrasound to visualize the heart and valve function. Treatment depends on the severity of the leak and the presence of symptoms, ranging from watchful waiting and medication to manage symptoms or underlying conditions, to surgical or transcatheter interventions to repair or replace the faulty valve.
