Ländryggskotor refers to the lumbar vertebrae, the five bones that make up the lower part of the vertebral column, located in the lumbar region of the spine. These vertebrae are situated between the thoracic vertebrae (above) and the sacrum (below). The lumbar vertebrae are the largest and strongest vertebrae in the spine, designed to bear the majority of the body's weight and withstand significant forces.

Each lumbar vertebra generally shares a common structure, consisting of a vertebral body, a vertebral arch, and several processes. The vertebral body is a large, kidney-shaped bone that forms the anterior part of the vertebra and supports axial load. The vertebral arch encloses the vertebral foramen, collectively forming the vertebral canal which houses the spinal cord. Projecting from the arch are various processes, including spinous processes (posterior), transverse processes (lateral), and articular processes (superior and inferior), which serve as attachment points for muscles and ligaments and facilitate articulation with adjacent vertebrae.

The lumbar spine plays a crucial role in movement, particularly in flexion, extension, and lateral bending of the trunk. The intervertebral discs, located between each lumbar vertebra, act as shock absorbers and allow for spinal flexibility. Conditions affecting the ländryggskotor, such as herniated discs or degenerative changes, can lead to lower back pain and other neurological symptoms.
