Lämpötilaelementti, known in English as a temperature element, is a general term for a device or sensor used to measure temperature. These elements are crucial components in a vast array of applications, from industrial processes and scientific research to everyday consumer products like thermostats and weather stations.

The fundamental principle behind most temperature elements is their ability to change a physical property in response to variations in temperature. This change is then converted into an electrical signal that can be read, recorded, or used to control other systems. Common types of temperature elements include thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), and thermistors. Thermocouples generate a voltage that is proportional to the temperature difference between two dissimilar metals. RTDs, typically made of platinum, tungsten, or nickel, exhibit a change in electrical resistance with temperature. Thermistors are semiconductor devices whose resistance changes significantly and predictably with temperature, often exhibiting a much higher sensitivity than RTDs.

The selection of a specific temperature element depends on factors such as the required temperature range, accuracy, response time, environmental conditions, and cost. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding these parameters. For instance, thermocouples are robust and can measure very high temperatures, while RTDs offer high accuracy and stability over a wide range. Thermistors are known for their sensitivity and fast response but may have a more limited temperature range. Understanding these characteristics is key to choosing the appropriate temperature element for a given task.
