Lämpönsiirtora, often translated as heat transfer, is a fundamental concept in physics and engineering that describes the movement of thermal energy from one location to another. This transfer occurs due to a temperature difference between the locations. There are three primary mechanisms by which heat transfer takes place: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact between particles. In solids, vibrations of atoms and molecules are passed along, transferring energy. In liquids and gases, collisions between molecules also facilitate this energy transfer. Materials with high thermal conductivity, such as metals, are good conductors of heat, while materials like wood or plastic are poor conductors, known as insulators.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which can be liquids or gases. When a portion of a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks. This creates a circulating current that transfers heat throughout the fluid. Examples include the heating of water in a pot or the circulation of air in a room.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium and can travel through a vacuum. The most common example is the Sun's heat reaching Earth. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation, and the amount and type of radiation depend on the object's temperature and surface properties. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for designing efficient heating and cooling systems, insulating buildings, and many other technological applications.
