Lämpöliitoksilla refers to thermal junctions, which are points where two or more different conductive materials are joined together. The primary phenomenon associated with a thermal junction is the Seebeck effect, where a temperature difference across the junction creates an electromotive force (voltage). Conversely, passing an electric current through a thermal junction can cause a temperature difference, known as the Peltier effect.

The properties of a thermal junction depend heavily on the materials used. For instance, in thermocouples, dissimilar metals are joined to measure temperature. When the junction is exposed to a different temperature than the reference junction, a measurable voltage is produced, which can be calibrated to indicate the temperature. In solid-state electronic devices, thermal junctions can occur unintentionally at interfaces between different semiconductor materials or between a semiconductor and a metal contact. These unintended junctions can influence device performance by generating or dissipating heat, or by rectifying electrical signals.
