Lämpöliikkeellä, or thermal motion, refers to the constant, random movement of atoms and molecules within a substance. This movement is a fundamental property of matter and is directly related to temperature. The higher the temperature of a substance, the greater the kinetic energy of its constituent particles, and thus the faster and more vigorous their thermal motion.

In solids, thermal motion manifests as vibrations of particles around their fixed positions in a crystal lattice. These vibrations can transfer energy to neighboring particles, leading to the conduction of heat. In liquids, particles have more freedom to move past one another, exhibiting a combination of vibrational and translational motion. This allows liquids to flow and also to transfer heat through convection and conduction. In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly and randomly, colliding with each other and the walls of their container. This rapid motion is responsible for the pressure exerted by gases and their ability to diffuse.

The concept of thermal motion is central to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. It explains phenomena such as diffusion, evaporation, and the pressure of gases. The average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance is directly proportional to its absolute temperature. Even at absolute zero temperature, where theoretically all motion would cease, quantum mechanical effects predict a residual zero-point energy, meaning some minimal motion persists. Understanding thermal motion is crucial for comprehending heat transfer, phase transitions, and the behavior of matter at different temperatures.
