Lämpöaktivoituvat, often translated as heat-activated or thermochromic, refers to materials that change their properties, most commonly their color, when exposed to a specific temperature threshold. This phenomenon is a result of reversible or irreversible chemical or physical changes within the material triggered by heat.

In the case of reversible thermochromic materials, the color change is temporary. Upon reaching a critical temperature, the material's molecular structure shifts, altering how it absorbs and reflects light, thus changing its perceived color. When the temperature returns to its original state, the material reverts to its initial color. This reversible nature makes them suitable for applications where repeated color changes are desired.

Irreversible thermochromic materials undergo a permanent change. This typically involves a chemical reaction that alters the material's composition, leading to a one-time color transition. Once this change occurs, it cannot be undone by simply returning the material to a lower temperature.

The specific temperature at which the color change occurs can be engineered during the manufacturing process, allowing for materials to be designed for a wide range of activation temperatures.
