Látóhatárbindung is a Hungarian term referring to the apparent bending or distortion of the horizon. This phenomenon is most commonly observed at sea or over large, flat expanses like deserts, where the curvature of the Earth becomes noticeable. The effect can be influenced by atmospheric conditions such as temperature gradients. When there is a significant difference in temperature between the air near the surface and the air above it, light rays can refract, or bend, as they pass through these layers. This refraction causes objects, including the horizon, to appear distorted. For example, a ship sailing towards the observer might seem to rise from below the horizon before its hull becomes visible. Conversely, under certain conditions, the horizon can appear to dip, making distant objects seem lower than they actually are.
