Founded in the 13th century as a trading post, Lánveitenda grew around a riverside market. It attained municipal status in the 15th century and developed a riverine port for goods and timber.

Lánveitenda is governed by an elected municipal council and a mayor. The council has 12 seats, with proportional representation from local parties. The town coordinates with the provincial authorities on regional planning and infrastructure.
