Lysutslag is a term used in some Nordic languages, notably Norwegian and Swedish, to describe a skin rash or eruption that is triggered by light exposure, particularly sunlight. This condition is a form of photosensitivity, where the skin reacts abnormally to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The appearance of lysutslag can vary greatly among individuals and may manifest as redness, itching, small bumps, or even blisters.

The underlying causes of lysutslag are diverse. In some cases, it can be a reaction to certain medications or chemicals that, when exposed to light, produce a photosensitizing effect on the skin. Topical agents like sunscreens, perfumes, or even certain plant compounds can be responsible. In other instances, lysutslag may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as polymorphic light eruption (PMLE), a common idiopathic photodermatosis where the immune system overreacts to sunlight. Less commonly, it can be associated with autoimmune diseases or metabolic disorders.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, a physical examination of the rash, and sometimes phototesting to confirm sensitivity to specific wavelengths of light. Treatment focuses on avoiding triggers, primarily by limiting sun exposure through protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreens. Antihistamines or topical corticosteroids may be prescribed to alleviate itching and inflammation. In severe or persistent cases, oral medications or phototherapy with controlled doses of UV light might be considered to desensitize the skin.
