The development of lead-free solders has been driven by environmental regulations such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, which limits the use of lead in electrical and electronic equipment. These regulations have necessitated the adoption of lead-free solders to comply with international standards and to promote a more sustainable manufacturing process.

Common lead-free solder alloys are based on tin, often alloyed with other metals like silver, copper, bismuth, and zinc. For example, SnAg (tin-silver) and SnCu (tin-copper) alloys are widely used. These alloys typically have higher melting points compared to traditional tin-lead solders. This higher melting point requires adjustments in soldering processes, such as higher soldering iron temperatures and longer heating times, which can sometimes lead to thermal stress on components.

Despite these challenges, lead-free solders offer significant environmental and health benefits by eliminating the risks associated with lead exposure. The transition to lead-free soldering has been a major undertaking for the electronics industry, requiring research, development, and process optimization to ensure reliability and performance.
