lungshunt
A lungshunt, also known as a pulmonary shunt, is a physiological condition where blood passes through the lungs without participating in gas exchange. This means that deoxygenated blood from the body flows through the pulmonary circulation but does not get oxygenated by the alveoli. Consequently, this unoxygenated blood mixes with oxygenated blood, leading to a lower overall oxygen saturation in the arterial blood.
There are two main types of lung shunts: intrapulmonary and extrapulmonary. Intrapulmonary shunts occur within the
The primary consequence of a significant lungshunt is hypoxemia, a low level of oxygen in the blood.
