Lungesystemet refers to the respiratory system in humans and other animals. It is responsible for the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide. The primary organs of the lungesystemet are the lungs, which are spongy organs located in the chest cavity. Air enters the body through the nose or mouth, passes through the pharynx and larynx, and then down the trachea, also known as the windpipe. The trachea then branches into two bronchi, one for each lung.

Within the lungs, the bronchi further divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles, which eventually lead to tiny air sacs called alveoli. It is in the alveoli that gas exchange occurs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli into the surrounding capillaries, where it binds to red blood cells and is transported throughout the body. Simultaneously, carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

The process of breathing, or respiration, is controlled by the diaphragm, a large muscle located at the base of the chest cavity, and the intercostal muscles between the ribs. When these muscles contract, the chest cavity expands, drawing air into the lungs. When they relax, the chest cavity shrinks, forcing air out. The lungesystemet is vital for sustaining life, as all cells in the body require a constant supply of oxygen to function. Diseases and conditions affecting the lungesystemet can significantly impair breathing and overall health.
