Luminiferøse, also known as luminiferous, refers to the hypothetical "ether" or medium once believed to fill all space and serve as the carrier of light waves. The concept originated in the 19th century as scientists sought to explain how light propagated through the vacuum of space, similar to how sound travels through air or water. According to the luminiferous ether theory, this medium was thought to be stationary and pervasive, providing a reference frame for the propagation of electromagnetic waves.

The idea of luminiferous ether was prominent in scientific discourse until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Experiments such as the Michelson-Morley experiment (1887) aimed to detect Earth's motion through the ether but failed to produce conclusive evidence of its existence. The null results of these experiments, along with the development of Albert Einstein's Special Relativity in 1905, rendered the concept of luminiferous ether obsolete.

Today, the term is primarily of historical interest, representing a scientific hypothesis that was eventually superseded by modern theories of electromagnetic radiation and spacetime. The understanding of light as an electromagnetic wave traveling through the vacuum of space, without requiring a medium, aligns with Einstein’s relativistic framework.
