Luminescen is a term sometimes used as an alternate spelling or shorthand for luminescence, the emission of light by a substance not caused by heat. In its broad sense, luminescence covers processes in which excited electronic states release photons as they return to lower energy levels, spanning chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science.

There are several major mechanisms of luminescence. Chemiluminescence occurs when a chemical reaction produces excited states that emit light. Bioluminescence is the biological counterpart, seen in many marine and terrestrial organisms, where enzymatic reactions generate light. Photoluminescence includes processes driven by light absorption, such as fluorescence (prompt emission) and phosphorescence (delayed emission due to trapping of energy in longer-lived states). Electroluminescence arises when electrical energy drives light emission, as in many modern displays and light sources. Persistent luminescence or afterglow refers to light emission that continues after excitation ceases.

Applications of luminescence are wide and diverse. In lighting and displays, luminescent materials enable energy-efficient LEDs and screens. In medicine and biology, luminescent probes, enzymes, and proteins aid imaging and diagnostics. In environmental sensing, chemiluminescent and fluorescent reporters detect pollutants or biological activity. Security, forensics, and anti-counterfeiting rely on luminescent inks and markers. Measurement of luminescence typically involves intensity, spectral distribution, and temporal decay (lifetime), with quantum yield as a key efficiency metric.

Historically, luminescence has been studied across disciplines, leading to advances in lighting, imaging, and material science. Today, it remains a central concept in understanding how matter interacts with energy to produce light without heat.
