Luftvägen, meaning "airway" in Swedish, refers to the passages through which air travels into and out of the lungs. This system is crucial for respiration, the process of gas exchange that sustains life. The human luftvägen begins with the nose and mouth, where air is warmed, humidified, and filtered. From here, air passes through the pharynx, a shared passageway for both air and food, and then the larynx, commonly known as the voice box, which also prevents food from entering the lungs.

The trachea, or windpipe, is a cartilaginous tube that conducts air further down. It branches into two bronchi, one for each lung. Within the lungs, these bronchi subdivide into progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles. The smallest bronchioles terminate in tiny air sacs called alveoli, where the critical exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the bloodstream takes place. Any obstruction or inflammation within the luftvägen can significantly impair breathing, leading to various respiratory conditions. Maintaining a clear and healthy luftvägen is therefore essential for overall health and well-being.
