Tanks are rated for specific service pressures, which can range from modest levels for light-duty tools to higher levels for industrial systems. Key components include an air inlet and outlet, a drain valve to remove accumulated condensate, a pressure-relief device, and mounting or vibration isolation. Internal coatings or moisture-control measures may be employed to minimize corrosion and moisture-related problems.

Sizing and installation vary with application. Capacities span from tens to thousands of liters, and operating pressures are chosen to match the downstream equipment and distribution network. Lufttanks are typically located near the compressor output or along the main distribution line and may be paired with air dryers and filters to improve air quality.

Safety and maintenance are essential. Tanks require periodic hydrostatic testing and inspection under applicable codes and standards. Regular checks for corrosion, dents, or seam integrity are recommended. Drain valves should be used to remove condensate, and pressure relief devices must be functional to prevent overpressure. Proper grounding and support are also important to prevent electrical hazards or mechanical damage.
