luftkjerne

Luftkjerne is a term used in Norwegian and other Scandinavian languages to describe a central region where air acts as the primary medium. In technical contexts it denotes an air core—a zone or component in which air, rather than a solid magnetic or dielectric material, constitutes the main medium. The concept emphasizes minimal interaction with solid media to reduce losses or nonlinear effects.

In electrical engineering, an air-core coil or transformer uses air as the magnetic medium. Benefits include very low core losses and stable high-frequency performance, while drawbacks are lower inductance for a given size and the need for larger dimensions to achieve the same energy storage as ferromagnetic cores. Air-core designs are common in RF applications, precision instrumentation, and certain high-frequency transformers where core saturation and hysteresis would be problematic.

In optics and photonics, hollow-core or air-core fibers guide light through an air-filled core. This configuration reduces light–matter interaction with the glass, which can lower attenuation for some wavelengths and enable novel guiding mechanisms. Manufacturing challenges and trade-offs in confinement and bandwidth are typical considerations for hollow-core fiber technology.

The term also appears in other disciplines where air plays the dominant role in the core of a system, such as central airflow passages in ducting or components designed to minimize solid-core effects. Because the exact meaning depends on the context, luftkjerne is best understood relative to the specific field and application.
