Luftfugter, commonly called a humidifier, is a device that increases the moisture content of indoor air. They are used in homes, offices, and clinics to counteract symptoms of dry air and to protect materials such as wood and textiles.

Humidifiers work by releasing water vapor into the air. They come in several main types: evaporative units that draw air through a moistened wick or filter; ultrasonic units that produce a fine mist with high-frequency vibrations; and warm-mist or steam units that boil water to emit vapor. Some models combine features or are marketed as "cool mist" or "warm mist."

Benefits include relief from dry skin, throat and nasal irritation, and reduced static electricity. They can also help maintain the humidity level preferred by sensitive equipment and indoor plants. A typical recommended indoor relative humidity is around 40–60%, depending on season and climate.

Risks include over-humidification, which can promote mold growth and dust mites. Ultrasonic units may emit mineral dust if the water is hard, while all models can foster bacterial growth if water is not changed regularly. To reduce problems: use clean, preferably distilled or demineralized water; empty and dry the reservoir when not in use; clean the unit according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Safety and usage notes: do not run humidifiers in unventilated spaces; place them on stable surfaces away from children and pets; avoid adding essential oils unless the device is designed for it. Regular maintenance and monitoring of indoor humidity help prevent issues and maximize benefits.
