luchtbarrières are materials or assemblies used in building construction to prevent the uncontrolled movement of air through the building envelope. They are typically installed within walls, roofs, floors, and around windows and doors to reduce draft, improve thermal performance, and protect the building from moisture and weather damage. The primary function is to minimise infiltration of outdoor air, which can lower indoor comfort and increase heating or cooling loads.

Common types of luchtbarrières include continuous membrane systems such as polyethylene sheets, bitumen‑based membranes, or synthetic breathable films. In addition, some structures use convective air barriers composed of perlite, vermiculite or mineral fiber bundles that act as a co‑sweep when joined to a conventional membrane. The selection of a particular material depends on the climate, building design, and the need for vapor permeability. In many countries, building codes prescribe minimum performance criteria for air barriers, including an air leakage rate limit expressed in CFM per square foot or at a specified pressure differential.

Installation involves a series of steps: first, the base structure must be dry and free of drafts; then the air barrier material is laid in a continuous, overlapping pattern; seams are sealed with compatible tape or adhesive; and finally, all penetrations for ducts, pipes, or electrical openings are sealed with flashing or barrier‑compatible materials. Proper ventilation strategies are necessary because a continuous air barrier can trap moisture if not integrated with a breathable layer or a vapor retarder.

When correctly installed and maintained, luchtbarrières significantly improve energy efficiency, extend the lifespan of building components, and contribute to healthier indoor environments by reducing airborne pollutants and dampness.
