The theoretical yield is calculated from stoichiometry, assuming complete conversion of the limiting reagent. The actual yield (lopputuotos) is the amount that can be isolated after workup, and it may differ from the crude or theoretical values.

Several factors affect lopputuotos, including reaction efficiency, side reactions, losses during isolation and purification, product volatility or decomposition, reagents’ purity, temperature control, solvent choice, and scale-up effects. Reporting and interpretation: in scholarly and industrial contexts, lopputuotos is reported with the mass or amount of product, the percent yield, and often purity and identity data (such as spectroscopy or chromatography results). Example: a synthesis with a theoretical yield of 50 g yields 42 g of product, corresponding to an 84% lopputuotos and a reported purity of 98%.

Beyond chemistry, the term may also be used more broadly to refer to the final result or deliverable of a process or project.
