lopezi

Lopezi is a rural municipality in the Verdo Province of Valoria, situated in the Verdo Valley near the foothills of Monte Alero. The municipality covers about 32 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 2,400 in 2022. The name Lopezi is believed to originate from the Lopezi family, who settled the area in the medieval period, with the -zi suffix common in local toponymy.

Historically, Lopezi developed as an agrarian community, with farming and craft workshops forming the basis of early prosperity. It gained municipal status in the early 19th century and expanded education and basic services in the following decades.

The economy centers on agriculture, especially grape cultivation for regional wines and olive oil production. In addition, small-scale manufacturing and food processing operate in a modest industrial zone. The surrounding landscape features vineyards, olive groves, and forested hills that attract visitors for hiking and scenic drives.

Cultural life is anchored by the harvest festival held each September, featuring traditional music, parades, and local produce fairs. The parish church of San Marco, built in the early 17th century, is a key historic landmark. The town also hosts a small museum detailing local rural life and genealogy.

Infrastructure includes a primary and a secondary school, a public library, a health center, and a regional rail station on the Valoria North line. Lopezi is connected by regional roads to neighboring towns, and it sits near the Lera Gorge, a protected natural area.
