Lixiviants are substances used in the process of lixiviation, which is a method of extracting a soluble component from a solid material by using a solvent. In essence, a lixiviant acts as a solvent that selectively dissolves and removes a desired element or compound from a mixture. This process is widely employed in various industries, most notably in mining and metallurgy for the extraction of metals from ores.

Common lixiviants include aqueous solutions of acids, bases, or salts, depending on the specific material being treated and the target substance. For example, in gold mining, cyanide solutions are often used as lixiviants to dissolve gold from ore. In hydrometallurgy, acids like sulfuric acid are frequently employed to leach copper or other metals from their oxide ores. Bases, such as sodium hydroxide, can also serve as lixiviants for certain applications.

The effectiveness of a lixiviant is determined by its ability to dissolve the target substance while minimizing the dissolution of unwanted components in the solid matrix. Factors such as concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time play crucial roles in optimizing the lixiviation process. Following the dissolution by the lixiviant, the resulting pregnant solution, containing the dissolved target substance, is then separated from the solid residue, and the target substance is subsequently recovered through further processing such as precipitation or electrowinning.
