Lithostratigraphy is a branch of stratigraphy that defines and describes rock units based on their lithologic characteristics. Lithology refers to the physical properties of a rock, such as its composition, texture, color, and sedimentary structures. The fundamental unit in lithostratigraphy is the lithostratigraphic unit, which is a body of rock that is defined by its lithologic properties and can be mapped at the Earth's surface or in the subsurface.

Lithostratigraphic units are organized into a hierarchy, ranging from the smallest unit, the formation, to larger units such as groups and supergroups. A formation is a mappable body of rock with distinct lithologic characteristics that differentiate it from the rocks above and below it. A group consists of two or more related formations, and a supergroup comprises two or more related groups. These units are named based on geographic locations where they are well-exposed or have been studied.

The primary goal of lithostratigraphy is to establish a chronologic framework for rock layers based on their physical characteristics, though it does not directly measure geological time. Instead, lithostratigraphic correlations are made by matching similar rock types between different locations. This allows geologists to understand the depositional environments and geological history of an area. Lithostratigraphy is a fundamental tool in geological mapping, resource exploration (like oil and gas), and understanding the Earth's past.
